Background
Scanning barcodes is used to identify products quickly and accurately. Gimme supports using the device camera to detect barcodes, but if you have a lot of barcodes to scan then a dedicated barcode scanner is best, for instance while doing an inventory in your warehouse or at a micro-market.
Device
We recommend the Eyoyo Scanner 2877C because it's inexpensive, reliable, and available on Amazon. This article gives specific instructions for that device, but Gimme works with any BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) enabled barcode scanner.
Device: Eyoyo Barcode Scanner Model 2877C [click here for Amazon link]
Step-by-Step Instructions
The Eyoyo scanner has different modes. There is a special "Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mode" that makes it work like magic with Gimme's software. In this mode you do not have to "pair" the scanner for it to work with the app. There are three steps to take to get it into the special BLE mode.
- Print the attached PDF with barcodes.
(Device cannot scan barcodes on an iPad screen) - Scan the three barcodes, in order.
(This activates the scanner in BLE mode). - Open Gimme Field. Go to the Warehouses page.
Look for the small Bluetooth icon in top right corner of the screen. - Repeat for all of the barcode scanners you have.
Done!
Troubleshooting
Signs your scanner is in the wrong mode:
- You have to "pair" the scanner through the Bluetooth screen.
- You have to swipe away the keyboard when you're scanning.
- The keyboard is completely gone when you're scanning.
- You have to keep tapping the box where you want the barcode to go.
- You don't see the blue bluetooth icon in the top right corner of the Gimme app when the scanner is on and nearby.
The following troubleshooting steps may help if the steps above didn't work.
The two biggest reasons it won't work:
One: if Bluetooth is turned OFF:
Resolution: Turn Bluetooth ON.
Leave the Gimme app. Go to the Home Screen.
Go to Settings, then Bluetooth. Turn on Bluetooth.
Two: if the Gimme Field app was DENIED permissions to use Bluetooth:
Resolution: Enable all permissions for Gimme software.
Leave the Gimme app. Go to the Home Screen.
Go to Settings, then scroll down to Gimme Field (it's in the bottom section).
Turn ON all permissions, including Bluetooth.
Other troubleshooting steps
If you don't see the bluetooth icon in the top right corner of the screen:
Note: You do NOT need to "pair" the scanner. This will take it out of the BLE mode.
- Try the steps above.
- Verify you are using the latest version of Gimme Field.
- Turn off the scanner. Force quit Gimme Field. Re-open Gimme Field app. Turn on the scanner.
If you DO see the bluetooth icon in the top right corner of the screen, but it doesn't seem to be working:
Note: Gimme will automatically detect the nearest Eyoyo scanner to connect with. If you have multiple scanners, it may be connecting to the wrong scanner.
- Power off the scanner.
- Force quit Gimme Field.
- Walk away from the other scanners and iPads/iPhones running Gimme Field.
- Reopen the Gimme Field app. Go to the Warehouses page.
- Keep the scanner close to the iPad and turn it on.
You should see a Bluetooth symbol at the top right corner of your screen in Gimme Field. Then, scanning a product opens the product in Gimme Field (Yay!)
Manufacturer Support
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, then it may be related to the scanner and not our software.
